Car Insurance & Road Tax During Lockdown
Exemption for renewal of road tax and driver licences that was originally set to end on 31st March 2021. Individuals were given 30 days after the exemption period, which is until 30 April 2021 to renew their expired road taxes and driver licences.
In light of the ongoing conditional movement control order (CMCO) and recovery movement control order (RMCO) that is being enforced across the country, the Transport Minister, Dr Wee Kah Siong announced a second extension for private vehicle owners whose driving licence or road tax payments expire in February and March 2021 have until May 31 to renew them, provided that the vehicle’s insurance is still valid!
Likewise, individuals whose road tax or driving licence expire in the coming period of 1st April 2021 until 31st May 2021 must have them renewed in the 60-day period from 30th June 2021 until 31st July 2021.
This extension is to serve as a precaution due to the continually high number of Covid-19 cases recorded in states such as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor to limit crowding in public places and curb the spread of the virus. However, failure to renew the necessary within the exemption period will still be a punishable offence!
As for car insurance, individuals may opt to use the extension to further delay the renewal of their car insurance. Without a valid third party car insurance, you will not be able to renew your vehicle’s road tax from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Malaysia. According to vehicle insurance agents, most individuals would choose to take full advantage of the road tax renewal extension as a measure to ‘save’ some cost by delaying the insurance renewal as most people have not been driving on the road due to the lockdown.
If your car insurance policy has expired, you may renew it without having to pay any penalties. While you can still drive your car with your expired road tax during the exemption period, you have to be mindful about not driving on the road until you get your car insurance renewed!
To avoid crowding, we highly encourage you to renew both road tax and car insurance online! Avoid the crowds and stay safe during this pandemic! Let’s uplift the KitaJagaKita spirit together!
